A Century Reimagined: A Renovation Journey

Haus of Taylor 113 Fincastle

Main Street Tazewell

Within the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, surrounded by the rolling beauty of Southwest Virginia, lies the charming and historic town of Tazewell. In December 2022, Mason Dixon Brothers LLC embarked on an ambitious and heartfelt project— with the beautiful transformation of a century-old building into a modern masterpiece of artistry and luxury. Located at 113 Fincastle Turnpike, this unassuming yet storied structure has been given a new lease on life.

Merging the heritage of its past with the sophistication of the present.

Tazewell Virginia Art Gallery Renovates 100 year old building in Historic District

Breathing New Life into History

The 1,000-square-foot building, a fixture of Tazewell for over a century, stood quietly in its aged glory, whispering stories of the generations it had served. Its upper floor, 500 square feet of potential and promise, was destined to house an artisan retreat—a fine art gallery and retail space to showcase talent and innovation.

The ground floor is an intimate 500-square-foot space that was envisioned to provide a luxurious overnight experience, a sanctuary enveloped in the tranquil beauty of the mountains within steps of Historic Tazewell, Virginia Main Street.

With this bold blueprint, the renovation began in earnest in late January 2023.

Walls were stripped to their bones, spaces cleared of a century’s wear, and the promise of a new purpose began to take shape. Sustainability and craftsmanship guided every decision, ensuring that the building’s rebirth was grand and mindful of the environment and the community it serves.

Crafting a Space Rooted in Heritage

Our commitment to sustainability lies at the heart of this transformation. Tazewell’s rich, storied legacy inspired every aspect of the design, and care was taken to honor its heritage while bringing it into the modern era.

Lime plaster and lime paint, sourced for their sustainable properties, now cover the walls with a timeless elegance. Reclaimed wormy chestnut wood, harvested from the family-owned barn, found a second life as striking accents throughout the property, lending warmth and charm.

Beneath your feet, cork flooring and wine cork tiles—a tribute to eco-conscious innovation—create a tactile experience that connects guests to the space. Sustainable recycled carpeting brings softness and comfort without compromising principles.

A bio-fuel fireplace provides heating, a sophisticated solution that complements the modern mini-split system, ensuring energy efficiency and year-round comfort.

No detail was overlooked. Every material and element was chosen for its quality, the story it tells, and the care it represents.

The Haus of Taylor Takes Shape

By February 2024, the transformation was complete. The building, now lovingly known as the Haus of Taylor, embarked on a new chapter as a beacon of art, culture, and hospitality in Tazewell.

On March 21, 2024, Haus of Taylor Gallery opened its doors to its debut exhibition, Faith Framed: Sacred Artistry in Lens and Brush. Helmed by resident artist Luther Taylor, this moving tribute combined photography and painting to explore spirituality and the human experience in a way that resonated deeply with all who attended.

Beyond its role as an art gallery, our space also became the retail home for Luther Taylor Organic Luxury Beard & Skin Care Oils. This artisan-crafted line of products, inspired by the surrounding natural beauty, aligns seamlessly with the building’s ethos of quality and sustainability.

Our gallery was thoughtfully designed as a sanctuary for creativity where the community and regional artists converge. Here, the walls will echo local talent’s stories, visions, and craftsmanship, celebrating the artistry and rich cultural tapestry that define our shared heritage. It’s more than a space—a collaboration, a testament to the union of art and community.

Restored Overnight Stay Experience in Tazewell Virginia Main Street Historic District

On the lower floor, The Farmhouse Suite offers an overnight stay. Merging modern luxury with rustic charm, the suite is designed to envelop guests in comfort. Plush bedding, thoughtful hospitality amenities, and curated design elements make every stay memorable. Guests can relax by the bio-fuel fireplace, enjoy the ambiance of bespoke furniture crafted from reclaimed wood, and immerse themselves in the serene surroundings of Tazewell.

Modern Legacy, Timeless Tradition

The renovation of 113 Fincastle Turnpike was more than a construction project—it was a labor of love, a bridge between the past and the future. It is now a testament to what is possible when vision and craftsmanship come together ideally. Every detail, from the materials used to its purpose, reflects a commitment to sustainability, heritage, and community.

This once-aging building is now a vibrant gathering place—a destination for art lovers, a haven for luxury travelers, and a lasting tribute to Tazewell’s history and beauty. Its reawakening ensures that it will continue to stand proudly for another hundred years, welcoming all who seek inspiration, serenity, and the timeless charm of Appalachian hospitality.

We invite you to experience the Haus of Taylor for yourself. Whether you’re exploring the gallery, indulging in the luxuries of The Farmhouse Suite, or discovering the artistry of Luther Taylor’s organic beard and skin care oils, one thing is sure—you’ll leave with renewed understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of handcrafted craftsmanship, both old and new.
